Arpana Caur

The 2006 Sikhpoint Calendar features the art of Arpana Caur, born in Delhi in 1954. She is a self-taught painter whose influences include her mother's writing, Punjabi folk literature, Pahari miniatures, and Indian folk-art motifs. Her focus has often been Indian women, and social, cultural, and spiritual themes.

By this calendar year she had shown in Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, London, Amsterdam, New York, Berlin, and Munich. Three works including Nanak and 1984 were on display at the Sikh Art Gallery in the Smithsonian. She was the first Indian artist commissioned (1995) for a large work at the Hiroshima Museum of Modern Art for the 50th anniversary of the atomic bombing.

The year includes Sacred Thread (Guru Nanak refusing the janeu), Sohni, Dancing Nanak, Death of Mardana, and A Landscape with Knives, from her 1984 series after the genocide of Sikhs.
