Going Global: Sikhs in Africa

The 2013 Sikhpoint Calendar is Going Global: Sikhs in Africa, the second year in the Going Global series. Contributors include photographer Jagjit "Jag" Reyatt (born Nakuru, Kenya), Harjinder Kanwal (born Machakos, 1943), and author Pally Dhillon, whose novel Kijabe follows Sikh pioneers in East Africa.

Between 1895 and 1902 the British recruited thousands of Indian indentured laborers, including Sikhs, to build the Uganda Railway from Mombasa to Lake Victoria. Many stayed and formed the middle economy of East Africa. Sikhs also served as police and askaris. Kala Singh, who arrived in 1896, was known to Africans as Kalasingha, a name that attached to turbaned Sikhs.

The year covers gurdwaras (Sri Guru Singh Sabha Nairobi, founded 1909, and Makindu, 1926), Baba Puran Singh of Kericho, trade unionist Makhan Singh, and sports figures such as Safari Rally winner Joginder Singh, the Flying Sikh, and Kenyan hockey players who filled Olympic squads in 1956, 1960, and 1964.
