2024

The 2024 Sikhlens Calendar features paintings by Japneet Kaur. The cover line is Laughing, Playing, Adorning, Feasting. She writes that the work is inspired by narratives, some personal, some borrowed, some real, some fantastical, around homes, habitats, ecosystems, and immigration.

Many pieces come from a childhood in Punjab: afternoons beside her Biji with sunlight through jasmine-lined windows, knitting for winter fog on lanes of poplar, summers of mangoes, a family of four on a lime green scooter, sunflowers grown from black seeds in a tiny garden. She mixes lived experience with a little magic, in honor of the first place and language that danced on her lips.

Japneet graduated in 2003 from Chandigarh College of Art and moved to Canada in 2006. She works as a painter, illustrator, potter, and animator. In 2017 she was selected Best of Show at the Toronto Outdoor Art Fair. In 2019 they named her one of their Juror's Picks.
