MEDITATING RED

This work is about life and death and its recurring cycles, upon which the yogi is meditating, that all that grows will one day perish. Intense awareness of death heightens the value of life lived meaningfully with devotion, compassion and usefulness to others. This is the essence of all spiritual philosophies.

The tree forms are from traditions of Indian miniature painting. The yogi’s posture harks back to the Mahabalipuram (South India) gigantic rock carving of Arjuna’s penance. In this painting, the universal truth of time, life and death, which are old and at the same time contemporary, are expressed in colors and forms truly Indian.
