Introduction

CRCI has always been a driver of multidisciplinary approach to heritage conservation. It was set up in 1995 by Gurmeet S. Rai, a Conservation Architect based in Delhi in the context of heritage conservation in India in the 1980s and '90s.

UNESCO's World Heritage Convention of 1972 had established a benchmark in regarding built heritage as a unique area of policy and action, requiring highly trained professionals. INTACH was set up as a national trust to evaluate, conserve and manage India's rich heritage resources.

CRCI treats heritage as a way into development, not a side project. The team of experts and specialists includes Gurmeet S. Rai, Director Conservation Architect and Heritage Management Specialist, along with social scientists and historians. Their work in Punjab includes conservation of historic buildings, gardens, and sites connected with Sikh heritage.
