SATHARI SINGH-KHALSA
NYC Subway Operator | New York, NY Sathari Singh-Khalsa (aka Kevin Harrington) is a retired New York City subway operator and lives with his wife and children in New York City. On September 11, 2001, he reversed a train headed for the violent chaos at Ground Zero, ensuring the safety of passengers. The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) honored Sathari Singh with an award for his heroic act.
But after 9/11, the MTA instituted a discriminatory policy that forced Sikh and Muslim employees to either brand their religious headwear with its logo - while not requiring the same headwear branding of other workers ~ or force them to work out of public view. Sathari Singh refused to submit to a cal culated attempt to segregate Muslims and Sikhs.
The Sikh Coalition sued the MTA and after seven years of legal advocacy, won a settlement that ended the policy of branding or segregating workers.
