The Sikh Farmer: Contributions and Struggles

Agriculture has been central to Sikh life and identity. The fertile lands of Punjab, once called the "Granary of India," have been the heart of Sikh farming. With migration waves starting in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Sikh farmers have established agricultural communities across the world, notably in Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, and East Africa.

This artwork depicts the Sikh blueberry farmers in North America, depicting how they have adapted to diverse climates, cultures and farming systems. Sadly, despite their contributions, Sikh farmers worldwide face challenges including land access, climate change impacts, and policy barriers. The recent farmers' protests in India, led predominantly by Sikh farmers, highlighted their struggle against policies perceived to threaten their livelihoods and traditional farming practice.
